We’re excited to introduce our new Tax Analysis feature. This powerful addition gives you everything you need to estimate and communicate a potential tax impact of investment decisions directly within CapIntel’s proposal workflow.
Tax Analysis brings clarity to conversations by showing clients where gains and losses may come from, how a transition affects overall tax liability, and how your recommendations can support long‑term goals. It gives you a more transparent way to guide clients through important decisions and helps them understand the real value of your advice.
How it Works?
Tax Analysis is supported through new options within the Portfolio Editor. These options allow cost basis and purchase date information to be added or imported allowing the platform to calculate realized and unrealized gains for each holding.
Preparing a Portfolio with a CSV
The template supports the following fields:
- Exchange (for example NASDAQ: XNAS, NYSE: XNYS, TSX: XTSE)
- Security Code or Identifier (ticker for stocks and funds)
- Units
- Cost Basis (price per unit at time of purchase)
- Purchase Date
Purchase Date is optional in the CSV and can be added later in the Portfolio Editor. When it is missing, the system treats the holding as long term. Cost Basis is optional in the CSV as well, but must be completed in the Portfolio Editor before running a tax analysis.
Note: If only some holdings include tax fields, the system uses whatever information is provided. Positions without lot details are treated as single lots until that information is added.
Preparing a Portfolio Manually
If a portfolio is created manually or uploaded without cost basis or purchase dates, these fields can be added directly in the Portfolio Builder. The Tax Details view allows you to enter purchase dates, units, cost basis, and lot information for each holding.
All required fields must be completed before Tax Analysis can run. Until then, the run option remains unavailable. Portfolios without these details can still be used in comparisons and proposals, but the tax impact cannot be calculated.
If only some positions include tax information, the system calculates results only for those holdings. Any position without complete tax fields is excluded from the analysis.
Managing Tax Details Across the Platform
Tax details for saved portfolios can also be updated directly within the contact profile. Opening a portfolio from the contact’s portfolio list displays the same Tax Details section that appears in the Portfolio Builder.
You can revise cost basis, edit or add lots, update purchase dates, or correct information from previous uploads. Any changes made here automatically carry into future comparisons that use that portfolio.
Running Tax Analysis in a Comparison
When the Tax Analysis tab is open, you can edit a portfolio and adjust its lots as needed. Year to date gains, losses, and carry forwards can be entered here as well. These fields reflect activity already realized in the account and can remain at zero if no adjustments are required.
Short term and long term capital gains tax rates can also be adjusted to match the client’s tax bracket.
